Credit utilisation is the second biggest factor in your credit score after payment history. It accounts for roughly 30% of your FICO score in the US and is a major factor in UK scoring models. This calculator shows you your exact ratio per card and overall — and tells you precisely how much to pay down to hit your target.

What Is Credit Utilisation?
Credit utilisation is the percentage of your available credit you are currently using. If you have a total credit limit of £10,000 across all your cards and your total balance is £3,000, your utilisation is 30%. Lenders and credit reference agencies see this as a signal of how dependent you are on credit.
What Utilisation Rate Should You Aim For?
Utilisation benchmarks — UK and US
Under 10% — Excellent. Maximum positive impact on your credit score.
10%–25% — Good. Demonstrates responsible credit use without dragging your score.
25%–50% — Fair. Starting to signal credit reliance. Score impact begins.
50%–75% — Poor. Significant negative impact. Lenders flag this in affordability checks.
Over 75% — Critical. Major score drag. Mortgage and loan applications likely to be declined.
Per Card vs Overall — Both Matter
Most people focus on their overall utilisation. But individual card utilisation matters too. One card maxed at 95% drags your score even if your overall utilisation looks fine. The calculator shows you both — and tells you which card to pay down first for the biggest score impact.
Fastest Ways to Improve Your Utilisation
Pay down the highest utilisation card first
Not the highest balance. Not the highest interest rate. The card with the highest utilisation percentage. That single card is doing the most score damage. Even a partial paydown on that card has an immediate effect on your score when reported to the credit reference agencies.
Request a credit limit increase
If your lender increases your limit from £3,000 to £5,000 and your balance stays at £1,500, your utilisation drops from 50% to 30% immediately — without paying a penny. Only do this if you are confident you will not spend the extra available credit.
Time your payments strategically
Credit card balances are reported to credit reference agencies on your statement date — not your payment due date. Pay your balance down before your statement closes each month and your reported utilisation will be lower even if you use the card regularly.

How quickly does credit utilisation affect my score?
Almost immediately. Once your lower balance is reported to the credit reference agencies — typically at your monthly statement date — your score updates within the next reporting cycle. Most people see score changes within 30 to 60 days of paying down their balances.
Does closing a credit card improve my utilisation?
No — it makes it worse. Closing a card removes that limit from your total available credit, which increases your overall utilisation percentage. Keep cards open if you can manage them responsibly. If a card has an annual fee you cannot justify, call the issuer and ask to downgrade to a free version first.
Does utilisation affect my score the same way in the UK and US?
The principle is the same but the scoring models differ. In the US, FICO weights utilisation at approximately 30% of your score. In the UK, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each have their own models but all treat high utilisation as a significant negative factor — particularly above 25%.
Can 0% utilisation hurt my score?
In the US, 0% utilisation can slightly lower your FICO score because it shows no active credit use. Aim for 1%–9% rather than zero. In the UK, this effect is less pronounced — keeping balances very low is generally positive.
What is the fastest way to lower my utilisation?
Pay down your highest utilisation card first. Then request a credit limit increase on other cards. Then work through the remaining balances in order of utilisation percentage. Track your progress with this tool and our AI Credit Score Roadmap.
