You tapped Pay in 4 at checkout and it did not feel like borrowing. It was.
Short answer: BNPL is a loan taken at checkout, usually split into four installments. The CFPB found 21.2% of consumers with a credit record used it in 2022, and about 63% of borrowers had more than one loan open at some point in the year. Whether it shows on your credit report depends on the provider, so check your own reports. Free help: NFCC, 877-360-6322.
The numbers, from the CFPB
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Consumers with a credit record who used BNPL, 2022 | 21.2% (17.6% in 2021) |
| Average purchase / median purchase, 2022 | $142 / $108 |
| Borrowers with multiple loans open at once at some point in the year | about 63% |
| Borrowers with loans across multiple firms, 2022 | 33% |
| Default rate on BNPL loans vs credit cards, 2019 to 2022 | about 2% vs about 10% |
All figures come from the CFPB’s January 2025 report on pay-in-four loans from six firms, using data through 2022 (CFPB report). The CFPB’s landing page for the study says it measures persistence of use, loan stacking and total unsecured debt (CFPB).
What a typical plan looks like
Our own illustration, not a quote: on the CFPB’s 2022 average purchase of $142, a 25% downpayment is $35.50 and the remaining $106.50 splits into three payments of $35.50, so four payments of $35.50 in total. Small amounts feel painless, which is why several plans at once are easy to lose track of.
Your credit report
The honest answer is provider by provider. Bankrate says Affirm began reporting to Experian on April 1, 2025 and TransUnion from May 1, 2025 (Bankrate). NerdWallet says Afterpay does not report payment history (NerdWallet). Our guide to what shows up on your credit report walks through the check.
The things you’re probably wondering
What is BNPL?
Buy now, pay later is a loan at checkout. The CFPB’s January 2025 study looked at pay-in-four loans from Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, PayPal, Sezzle and Zip, and says the standard product asks for a 25% downpayment with the rest paid in installments (CFPB report). Terms vary by provider and plan.
How common is BNPL?
The CFPB report found 21.2% of consumers with a credit record used BNPL in 2022, up from 17.6% in 2021 (CFPB report). That is data through 2022, so current use may differ.
Is BNPL safer than a credit card?
On defaults, the CFPB report found borrowers defaulted on about 2% of their BNPL loans from 2019 to 2022, against about 10% of their credit cards, and links the gap partly to automatic repayment requirements (CFPB report). That compares default rates, not total cost or total risk.
What is loan stacking?
Holding several BNPL loans at once. The CFPB report found about 63% of borrowers had multiple simultaneous loans at some point in the year, and 33% did so across multiple firms in 2022 (CFPB report).
Does BNPL affect my credit?
It depends on the provider. Bankrate says Affirm reports pay-over-time loans to Experian and TransUnion (Bankrate), while NerdWallet says Afterpay does not report payment history (NerdWallet). Our Afterpay and Affirm credit report guide compares them, and our BNPL and FICO score guide covers scoring models.
What happens if I miss a payment?
It depends on the plan. NerdWallet says Afterpay Pay in 4 charges a late fee of up to $8 after a 10-day grace period, capped at 25% of the order value, and pauses your account (NerdWallet). Bankrate cites the CFPB as saying an unpaid plan may go to a debt collector (Bankrate). See our collections timeline guide.
Do BNPL users carry other debt?
Often. In 2022, 89.2% of heavy BNPL users had credit cards, against 81.5% of people with no BNPL use, and BNPL users held $871 more in credit card balances than non-users in the same age and credit score group over 2020 to 2022. The report says this is correlation, not causation (CFPB report).
