The mortgage broker turns the screen round, and there it is: a missed payment from years ago that you had completely forgotten.
Most people see their credit file for the first time at that moment, after the application is already in. To check your credit score for free takes a few minutes and costs nothing. The only real question is which free option to use, because the score and the report are not the same thing.
Short answer: Yes, you can check your credit score and report for free in the UK. You have a legal right to a free statutory credit report from each credit reference agency (the companies that hold your credit file), and free score services such as ClearScore (Equifax data) and Experian’s own free score are available too. MoneyHelper says four agencies hold your information, so check all four before a big application. Checking your own score does not damage it.

Score or report: which do you actually need?
They answer different questions. A score is a single number, built by each provider on its own scale, and it is a quick health check. A report is the raw file: your accounts, payment history, searches and details. The statutory report is the legal version. TransUnion says it is a legal right under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and UK GDPR, it is free, you can request it as often as you like, and it does not include a score (TransUnion).
For spotting mistakes, the report is the one that matters. For tracking progress month to month, a score app is easier.
Where to look, by agency
| Provider | Agency data | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ClearScore | Equifax | Free score and report; refreshed weekly when something changes | ClearScore |
| Experian free account | Experian | Free score; Experian’s page notes an account linked to an Open Banking current account is required | Experian |
| Credit Karma, TotallyMoney | TransUnion | Free TransUnion score; TransUnion’s own site does not offer one | NerdWallet UK |
| Statutory report | Each agency | Free legal right; report only, no score | TransUnion, MoneyHelper |
Offers change, so confirm on the provider’s site. NerdWallet UK reports that MyEquifax is free for 30 days and then paid, which is why ClearScore is the free route to Equifax data.
Look at what this means in practice. Free score apps get you three numbers quickly. The statutory reports take longer but show the detail the apps summarise.
Why your numbers will not match
Each agency uses its own scale, so the same file can look very different. Here is how ClearScore lists the bands (ClearScore):
| Band | Experian (0 to 1,250) | Equifax (0 to 1,000) | TransUnion (0 to 999) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 1,121 to 1,250 | 811 to 1,000 | 786 to 999 |
| Good | 861 to 1,000 | 531 to 670 | 653 to 785 |
| Fair | 641 to 860 | 439 to 530 | 563 to 652 |
| Poor | 0 to 640 | 0 to 438 | 488 to 562 |
Source: ClearScore, for general guidance only; providers can update bands. Experian also has a Very good band (1,001 to 1,120) and Equifax one (671 to 810); TransUnion has Very poor (0 to 487) instead.
One more thing that is new this autumn. Which? reports that TransUnion’s UK scores are moving from a 0 to 710 scale to 0 to 999, rolling out across monitoring partners from late September 2026 to June 2027, so you may temporarily see two different TransUnion scores. Which? says the information shared with lenders is unchanged and seeing two numbers won’t affect lender decisions (Which?).
What to check once you are in
- Your name and every address, including old ones. MoneyHelper notes even a typo in an address can affect an application.
- That you are registered to vote at your current address.
- Credit you did not apply for, which can be a sign of fraud.
- Accounts and payment history, especially anything marked late or defaulted. If a default looks wrong, see how to remove a default, and for what one means, what a default is.
If something is accurate but needs context, MoneyHelper says you can add a Notice of Correction with each agency; it does not affect your score but may slow an application (MoneyHelper). The credit utilisation calculator shows how much of your card limits you are using, one thing you can change quickly.
Three scales, three meanings
Experian runs 0 to 999, Equifax 0 to 1,000 and TransUnion 0 to 710, so the same file can look poor on one and good on another. Compare your number only with the same agency’s bands, over time. The full bands are in what counts as a good credit score in the UK.
Watch for the paid upgrade
Free scores sit next to paid monitoring. Which? reports that Experian’s and Equifax’s paid services cost around £15 a month after a 30-day free trial, and CheckMyFile is only free for 30 days. Check the terms and set a reminder before the trial ends. A check of your own score is a soft search, so it does not show to lenders. Being on the electoral roll helps your file with every agency.
What readers often ask
Does checking my own credit score hurt it?
No. ClearScore says checking your score on its service won’t affect it (ClearScore), and NerdWallet UK explains that checking your own file is a soft search, which only you can see; the hard searches lenders run when you apply are visible to other lenders (NerdWallet UK).
Why is my score different on every app?
Different agencies hold different data and use different scales. Experian’s runs to 1,250, Equifax’s to 1,000, and TransUnion’s is moving from 0 to 710 to 0 to 999 (Which?). A score of 700 means different things on each, so compare it with that agency’s own bands, not with another app.
Do I need to check all of them?
MoneyHelper says four agencies hold your information (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and Crediva) and it is best to check all four well before an application (MoneyHelper). If you only have time for one, start with the one you can get for free fastest, then add the statutory reports.
I found something I don’t recognise. What now?
Report it to the credit reference agency, which checks with the lender. MoneyHelper says the agency should remove a confirmed error and the process should take no more than 28 days, with the item marked disputed meanwhile. If you think fraud is involved, say so. You can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office if an agency or lender won’t fix a genuine mistake (MoneyHelper).
A company offered to repair my credit for a fee. Worth it?
MoneyHelper says most credit repair firms only explain how to view your report and improve your rating, which you can do yourself for free, and that firms claiming to do things they legally can’t, or encouraging you to lie to the agencies, should never be used (MoneyHelper).
My score is low. Where do I start?
Start with the report, not the number: wrong details and old addresses are the quickest to fix. Then work on what is under your control. What counts as a good score, how to improve it and the free AI Credit Score Roadmap cover the next steps.
Is there any way to check my score without a free trial?
Yes. The free Experian app, ClearScore (Equifax data) and Credit Karma (TransUnion data) are free without a paid plan. Money Saving Expert’s Credit Club offers a free TransUnion report too. Avoid anything that asks for card details.
