A mortgage adviser points at an account on your credit file that you do not remember opening, and it turns out to be a three-instalment trainer purchase from last year.
Short answer: Klarna reports to Experian and TransUnion; the sources we found say Clearpay does not report repayments. Missed BNPL payments can be recorded and seen by lenders. Provider rules change, and the FCA rules from 15 July 2026 may change them again, so check your own files. Free help: StepChange, 0800 138 1111.
Who says what
| Provider | What the sources say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Klarna | Experian and TransUnion; soft check for Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 days; hard check for Klarna Financing | ClearScore (March 2026 data) |
| Klarna (start date) | Repayment data shared from 1 June 2022 for new purchases | MoneySavingExpert |
| Clearpay | No agencies listed; soft check only; collection agency damage still possible | ClearScore (March 2026 data) |
| Clearpay (2022) | Said it had no intention of sharing data with agencies | MoneySavingExpert |
ClearScore warns that its provider claims need substantiating with each provider, and that terms may change around the July 2026 regulation start. Treat the table as a starting point, not a guarantee.
Check your own files
- Get all your credit reports, not one. Our free credit score check guide lists the free routes.
- Look for agreements you do not recognise. Experian says each new BNPL purchase is usually recorded as a new credit agreement (Experian).
- Note any late markers and their dates.
- If something is wrong, ask the provider to correct it before applying for a mortgage.
Before a mortgage
Even if a provider does not report to an agency, lenders may still ask about BNPL on application. See our guide to which UK mortgage lenders ask about BNPL for what the available evidence shows.
Common worries, answered plainly
Does Klarna report to UK credit reference agencies?
Yes, according to MoneySavingExpert, which reported on 1 June 2022 that Klarna would share repayment data with Experian and TransUnion for new UK purchases from that date (MoneySavingExpert). ClearScore’s August 2026 provider table, with data correct as of March 2026, also lists Experian and TransUnion for Klarna and does not mention Equifax (ClearScore).
Does Clearpay show up on a UK credit file?
The two sources we found say it does not report repayments. MoneySavingExpert reported in 2022 that Clearpay said it had no intention of sharing customer data with credit reference agencies (MoneySavingExpert). ClearScore’s March 2026 table lists no agencies and adds that missed payments passed to a collection agency can still cause damage (ClearScore). Other sites claim otherwise, so check your own files.
Will a missed payment be recorded?
It can be. Experian says missed BNPL payments could be recorded and seen by future lenders, depending on the lender (Experian). ClearScore says Klarna records missed payments (ClearScore). Our missed payment guide covers what usually happens next.
Does using Klarna hurt my score if I pay on time?
MoneySavingExpert said in 2022 that on-time purchases could help a credit file, while late and unpaid ones could be detrimental (MoneySavingExpert). Klarna said at the time that the data would not feed into scores yet, so the effect depends on each lender. Our does BNPL help your credit score guide goes further.
Is there a credit check when I use Klarna or Clearpay?
ClearScore’s table says Klarna uses a soft check for Pay in 3 and Pay in 30 days and a hard check for Klarna Financing over 6 to 36 months, and that Clearpay uses a soft check only (ClearScore). Experian says soft checks are more common and some firms may run a hard check (Experian).
What changed on 15 July 2026?
ClearScore says the FCA’s final BNPL rules, published in February 2026, apply from 15 July 2026, with affordability checks required (ClearScore). Experian says most BNPL providers will be FCA regulated from that date (Experian). Our FCA BNPL regulation guide has the detail.
How do I see what is on my file?
Check all your files, not just one. Our free credit score check guide lists the free routes. Look for new credit agreements you do not recognise, because Experian says each new BNPL purchase is usually recorded as a new credit agreement (Experian).
